Mary Brown

I have been a Senior Lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University since 1990.  I am a nurse with considerable experience in clinical practice, education and management of teams.  My current educational focus is the development of post graduate educational programmes for advanced practice.  I am a member of the Faculty Student's Ethics Committee.

Since 2005 I have been the Programme Director for the MSc Interprofessional Health and Social Care where I have made significant developments in supporting the development of advanced practice and improving the capacity for research supervision.  Prior to this role I was the Programme Director for the BSc (Hons) Clinical Practice Development from 2000.  During the 1990's I was involved with the Pre-Registration Adult Nursing curriculum and subject development.

During my time at CCCU I have been instrumental in the development of new programmes, creating new modules for the pre and post registration curriculum's.  My areas of interest are the art and science of nursing, practice development, advanced practice, creativity and therapeutic nursing, women's health, mental health and the support of practitioners within learning environments.

This latter interest led to undertaking research into the Student Perceptions of Mentorship in 1988 followed by research into the Role and Support for Perceptorship in 1994.  In 2001 a secondment to the RCN led to the development of the Clinical Placement Toolkit for students.

I began my Registered Nurse (RN) training at St Thomas's London in 1965 and completed it at Kent & Canterbury in 1968.  Since qualifying in 1968 I have held a number of posts in practice, education and management in both the NHS and private sectors, specifically within the contexts of Surgical Nursing, Gynaecology, Oncology, Renal and ENT working in hospitals in Canterbury, Hastings, Surrey and London.  I studied at London University for the Diploma in Nursing (Surgical and Surrey University for the BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies later completing a Masters in Health Service Management at UKCC and currently undertaking the Ed.D at CCCU.
