Master of Research MRes (Health)

Aimed at Health & Social Care professionals who wish to integrate research into their practice or to pursue doctoral level study.

The MRes is a programme in research methodology that prepares students to the level of initial doctoral study or equivalent. It is concerned primarily with procedural aspects of investigation rather than with substantive aspects of subject knowledge.

The programme adopts a particularly flexible and creative form to enable students with different requirements to make use of it in different ways.

The programme aims:

  • To provide students with the high level theoretical background and skills in research necessary to prepare them to carry out research at doctoral level or to pursue a career in research
  • To provide students with a broad, critical understanding of research theory and practice at a generic level, which will provide a perspective within which to assess and design research as relevant to their own discipline, in either Health or Education
  • To equip students with the specialist skills necessary to design a research project and to communicate the rationale of this design at a high level

Programme Structure

To achieve the MRes (Health) students must take six modules (120 credits) which must include two specialist modules in Health, plus the dissertation (60 credits). The dissertation will provide opportunities for students to continue their chosen pathway with individualised specialist work.

Generic Modules

These modules will provide broad perspective across all disciplines of research within which students can place and better understand their own approaches.

Research theory and design Accessing evidence and analysis
Qualitative methods Quantitative Research Design and Analysis

Specialist modules in Health
These modules demonstrate how the broad approaches and practices addressed in the generic modules relate to the professional and practical issues in Health.
Advanced Research Methods in Health and Social Care Developing a Research Proposal in Health and Social Care Undertaking a Systematic Review

Entry requirements

The entry requirements for the MRes will normally be a BA or BSc degree in an area relevant to the specialist pathway chosen at 2.1 level or above.

Credit may be given for other qualifications and experience that may compensate for the lack of the normal requirement, at the discretion of those responsible for admission to the programme, in line with normal University College procedures.
