MSc Medical Imaging

  • The specific aims of the Programme include the need for students to demonstrate explicitly advanced competence in Medical Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Nuclear Medicine and Medical Imaging practice, together with the need to critically analyse the impact of such role development initiatives in Medical Imaging;
  • In the profession of Radiography there is evidence of the increasing importance of role development for Radiographers.  This Programme and its outcomesare entirely consistent with reference points with the Radiography profession specifically and healthcare provision in general;
  • Students' evaluation feedback on modules confirms that the students rated the quality of teaching very highly;
  • The Medical Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine and MRI students are all working full or part-time in the various modalities which confirms the effectiveness of the module as preparation for employment in that modality;
  • The majority of students who have successfully completed Open modules are working at an advanced level in their chosen area of role development.
  • The College of Radiographers actively support role development by Radiographers and this is reflected in the relevant codes, statements and guidance documents that have been published in recent years;
  • The following positive comments were made by our students in relation to  learning and teaching:

"Good use of materials helped with learning."

"Small groups which helped as teaching and learning were individualised."

The effectiveness of the content of the modules in enabling students to achieve the stated learning outcomes is seen in the skills development attained by  students and the progressive understanding of the principles, concepts and topics which underpin the programme.

  • The following positive comments were made by students in relation to aims and learning outcomes:

"My understanding of physics in ultrasound is now good; being able to ask questions really helped."

"I have read around the subject in great depth (probably too much) but have enjoyed learning about the pathology, imaging, ethics, professionalism, etc"

"I have acquired a new skill, which is much more patient-orientated than MRI. Writing reports is an additional responsibility which brings more job satisfaction."

Students' course evaluations either strongly agreed or agreed that the three Medical Ultrasound Clinical Applications & Management modules were well structured and that issues were dealt with at the appropriate level and in sufficient depth.  As all of these modules were work-based, it was particularly pleasing to hear that the students felt the modules to be well structured to meet their learning requirements.

Students strongly agreed that the Principles of Science and Technology in Medical Ultrasound module  was well structured and that issues were dealt with at the appropriate level and in sufficient depth.

  • The following positive comments were made by the External Examiner in relation to aims and learning outcomes:

"Learning outcomes are demanding but appropriate and achievable. There is evidence within students' work that the intended learning outcomes are being met."

"The majority of work I have seen this year is clearly at Masters level. Where students fail to meet the standard, markers clearly identify this and give constructive feedback to the student on how the work can be improved. Some of the students' work is of a very high standard and worthy of publication."

  • The following positive comments were made by students in relation to the curriculum:

"The physics module alongside really helped me utilise and understand the equipment better."

"Workbased module was convenient to adjust with routine, as no time off was needed."

  • The following positive comments were made by the External Examiner in relation to the curriculum:

"The programme includes some very relevant modules which greatly enhance the professional knowledge and practice of students."

"The curriculum provides a broad range of topics that reflect modern healthcare needs."
