Rayya is a senior lecturer in the Allied Health Department and is the Programme Director for the MSc Advanced Occupational Therapy Practice. She is also a National Teaching Fellow.
She joined the university in 2001. Her clinical background is in adult mental health and pain management.
Rayya is interested in occupational determinants of health and well-being and with Ian Marsh, has developed a critical thinking tool to help students critically analyse the enablers and barriers to participation in occupations. This is called 'Contexts of Participation' and was published by Client Services (CCCU) in 2007. This has now been turned into a fully interactive digital tool with mini-project funding from the Higher Education Academy (Health Sciences and Practices)
She is actively involved in developing solution focused brief therapy and its application to occupational therapy practice and is co-author of 'Creating Positive Futures: Solution Focused Recovery from Mental Distress' with Sarah Mousley and Lucie Duncan (Published by BT Press 2007).
In 2006 Rayya received a Teaching Excellence Award from Canterbury Christ Church University and in 2008 she was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy.
Finally, Rayya is passionately interested in promoting and developing active learning strategies in higher education and believes that learning should be a transformative experience for students and staff alike. She is a member of the Faculty of Health and Social Care Learning and Teaching Committee.
