Professional Lead for Operating Department Practice

I have a long history within the peri-operative field, both as a practitioner and as an educator. Following Qualifying in 1980 I completed a period of consolidation before moving to specialise in Cardiac and Neuro-surgery at the Brook Hospital London. Subsequently I was appointed Principal Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) responsible for Neuro-surgery and Anaesthetic Imaging services. After completing eight years in this branch of theatre I moved back to Kent to take up a post as Clinical Principal ODP (Education). In 1995 I was appointed as Senior Lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church university where remains to date.
Over the past 15 years I have been actively involved in publishing and conference presentation in relation to ODP Education and professional development of the ODP profession, in particular I have led the development of a framework to support Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for the ODP leading to professional registration in 2004.
I was appointed in February 2002 to then Association of Operating Department Practitioners (AODP) Board, now the College of Operating Department Practitioners (CODP). During which time I was involved with the development of the standards of proficiency, scope of practice and subject benchmarks for ODP in accordance with the transfer of the profession to the Health Professions Council (HPC) in October 2004.
In May 2004 I was awarded the Association of Operating Department Practitioners Fellowship for outstanding service to the ODP profession. Following this I was nominated and subsequently appointment by the Privy Council and the Department of Health as the Alternate ODP Council Member at the Health Professions Council (HPC). This position I held until July 2009, In addition to this appointment I was a member of the Education & Training Committee and previously a visitor partner for ODP Programme Approvals at the HPC. During this period I have been involved with a number of Professional Liaison Group these include the development and publication of the HPC Standards for CPD and the guidance document for the Standards of Education and Training.
I was appointed Professional Lead for Operating Department Practice in January 2005.
I am currently External Examiner at another University and previously two other Universities and have been External Adviser/Subject Expect on programme development at a number of Universities over the last ten years
