Midwifery Students Raise over £5000 for Cancer Research

On Sunday 9 July, a group of 11 Midwifery students from Canterbury Christ Church University completed Cancer Research's 5k Pretty Muddy event in Maidstone, raising over £5,000 for the charity.

After their friend and fellow Midwifery student, Lucy, was diagnosed with bowel cancer in April, the students came together and formed Team Lucy - determined to raise as much money as possible for the charity. Here, they share their experiences of the day.

The Pretty Muddy event is something a few of us got involved in last year as a great way to raise money for such an amazing charity, and we’d always said we would love to do it again. Upon Lucy’s diagnosis of bowel cancer in April we were even more determined to gather a team of like-minded mad fools who wanted to chuck themselves through muddy puddles and raise money at the same time!

Pretty Muddy Midwifery team

Eleven of us gathered and formed a Student Mudwives team for Lucy! We all felt it extremely important to incorporate our Dear Lucy’s experiences into our fundraising, as we all know at least one person who is affected by cancer, and for it to be our very own, loving and kind Lucy, we knew we needed to form a team, and Team Lucy was born (excuse the midwifery pun!).

Sunday 9 July came around quickly, which I’m sure those that took part would agree with me, wish they’d done even a little bit of preparation! It was gloriously sunny and to us, depicted Lucy very well, sunny, bright and so much fun! We mixed up our 'running' with some walking and slow jogging, threw ourselves into mud baths, under muddy cargo nets and over inflatable obstacles around a 5k route in Mote Park. We ended on a high launching ourselves down a huge inflatable slide into murky mud, with a photo finish we were glad to see our friends and family with a clean towel for a soggy ride home!

As a MidSoc group we raised £2,791.60 and with the addition of the amount raised by Lucy’s school friends (£1,415.00), the total for Team Lucy was just over £5,000 (including gift aid)!

Team Lucy member, Vicki, said:

"Cancer is a terrible thing that happens to too many people, if we can raise just a small amount of money to help continue the good work then that's what we will carry on doing!"

While team Lucy member, Emma, said:

"We're really proud of the team effort to raise such a huge amount for such a great cause, team MidSoc did a fantastic job on the day and we can't wait until next year."
