Dr David Starkey CBE, Historian, broadcaster and writer

Tuesday 11 May, Augustine House, Canterbury

David Starkey was born in Kendal, Cumbria, in 1945. He was a gifted student and, after excelling at Kendal Grammar School, won a scholarship to read history at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge.

After gaining his doctorate, he taught history at the London School of Economics from 1972 to 1998. During this period he began a parallel career as a television and radio presenter.

David Starkey’s series Henry VIII and his Queens, Elizabeth I and the lesser known Tudor monarchs made him a familiar face on British television. In 2004 he began an incredibly popular multi-series documentary on the British monarchy from the Middle Ages to the present day.

David was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1994 and was appointed CBE in the Queen's 2007 Birthday Honours list.
