In this unique lecture, performer and teacher Angela Wooi will explore the diversity and evolution of Middle Eastern dance from its ancient origins to contemporary fusion, from Pharonic times through the dusty streets of Cairo and the Khan al Khalili via Transylvania. Angela discusses the use of theatre, drama and narrative in dance, the emergence of Gothic and asks the question - what is to become of the world’s oldest dance form?
Biography
Angela Wooi is a professional Egyptian and Gothic belly dancer, instructor and choreographer, who has performed nationally and internationally. She has studied with some of the greatest names in Middle Eastern dance, such as Raqia Hassan , Mahmoud Reda and Amel Tafsout. She produced, directed and choreographed, The Bride for Dracula, the world’s first and only belly dance version of Bram Stoker's classic novel, Dracula.
Angela is one of the only instructors in Kent teaching Gothic style belly dance and runs two troupes - Anaconda, which dance traditional and contemporary belly dance, and The Brides, which only dance as blood-sucking Vampires! Her dances push the boundaries of Middle Eastern dance, mixing the traditional with the macabre, the kitsch with the comedy, to create something totally unique and inspiring.
