Making Politics Matter: The Role of Spirituality in Modern Europe
Europe is in the worst crisis since its creation in the 1950s. Focusing on Jacques Delors' request for a "Soul for Europe" we will discuss what the future of the EU is and how the current crisis of economics and identity can be overcome.
Europe is in the worst crisis since the creation of the European Community in the 1950s. The project of European integration faces the challenge of a global economic crisis and a simultaneous internal crisis, which focuses particularly around the common currency of the Euro.
However, observers have noted that Europe is in a deeper crisis and that it is about more than just economics, Europe is in a crisis of identity. What is the future of the EU? Will Europe indeed run the 21st century, as Mark Leonard claimed a few years back? Or will the EU fall apart and new forms of nationalism will arise?
Dr Michael Kuhn will discuss these questions in the context of spirituality. Focusing on former European Commission President Jacques Delors' request for a "Soul for Europe" and on the demand for a new ideological framework for European integration by German Constitutional Court Judge Andreas Vosskuhle, Dr Kuhn will discuss why questions about Spirituality in Europe are more important than everand how this can help us to address the challenges of the future.
Everyone is welcome to join us in the debate!
