The Canterbury Chamber Orchestra conducted by Michelle Castelletti
To Live for You - To Die for You - Mahler Symphony No 10 (orchestrated/recreated by Michelle Castelletti)
Mahler’s 10th Symphony, possibly one of his most poignant, passionate and autobiographical creations, represents a fascinating journey in performance, musicology and analysis, offering psychological insights into the genius that was Mahler – a mesmerising voyage for the composer, performer and conductor.
Tonight, under the baton of the orchestrator, we shall be witnessing the world premiere of this re-working of Mahler’s unfinished symphony. Scored for chamber orchestra, this work continues the tradition of re-orchestrating large-scale late-Romantic works for smaller ensembles, as established at the beginning of the twentieth century by Arnold Schoenberg, his students Erwin Stein, Hans Eisler and Karl Rankl and the Verein für musikalische Privataufführungen.
