Christ Church Lecturers to show at the Royal Academy of Arts
Tim Long, lecturer in Digital Media in Canterbury, and Rob Ball, lecturer in Photography at Broadstairs are exhibiting works at the Royal Academy Summer Show in London between 4 June and 12 August 2012.
Now in its 244th year and attracting over 11,000 entries, The Summer Show continues the tradition of showcasing work by both emerging and established artists in all media including painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, architecture and film.
Rob’s image ‘Paper round #2’ is from his series Unremarkable Stories, a re-engagement with the Essex urban landscape of Rob’s youth addressing concerns relating to ambition, idealised childhood memory, and suburbia. Rob has commented ‘…I feel it all coming back; building dens, sitting under the bridge smoking, scouring the landscape for porno mags and most of all, hanging around because there’s nothing to do here. The park was our haven – the only place where we would be left alone.’
Rob’s book, Unremarkable Stories, published by the Burton Press, is available at the Sidney Cooper Gallery Canterbury or via Rob’s website.
Tim Long has commented on his work, ‘Wake’, 'it is a carved wooden head – it looks like a person or a ghost but then unexpectedly reverts to a lump of wood painted white…’.
Tim's objects have a peculiar ability to convey power and presence by borrowing qualities found in ethnographic and early modernist sculpture.
