Student Associate Scheme

Testimonials - Lecturers' Comments

A student's application was significantly enhanced by her having observed lessons and assisted teachers for three weeks in a local secondary school as part of the Student Associates Scheme. She was mainly involved with mathematics classes, but also had some involvement with citizenship and ICT. The experience gave her useful insights into learning and teaching styles and very much confirmed her desire to teach. As part of the interview process, we look to see whether appropriate research into teaching has been carried out and whether the applicant has obtained relevant experience. The scheme helps considerably with this.

When interviewing students I am really interested in finding out just what this person really knows about life in school and also whether they have a strong commitment to working with young people. Previous experience of school and work with young people really shines through in how interviewees for the PGCE programme present themselves and Jonathan was a fine example of this. In interview he was more realistic about school and also confident and better prepared, both for the interview and the PGCE course, because of his involvement on the Student Associate Scheme. As far as I am concerned involvement in the scheme or something similar is an important thing I look for when considering applicants to the RE PGCE.
