The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB)

Student Associate Scheme

All students applying to work with children or vulnerable adults, as from 2002 are required, in line with DCSF guidelines, to gain clearance from the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) before going onto placements.  This requires you to complete a disclosure application form which the University will then submit to the Criminal Records Bureau.  The CRB will then provide us with details of any previous convictions, bindovers, or police cautions that you may have.

The CRB has a 'Code of Practice' that all institutions must follow when dealing with Disclosure Applications and Canterbury Christ Church University is committed to following this 'Code of Practice.'  A copy of the CRB 'Code of Practice' is available on request.

All students wishing to enter the teaching or health professions are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974), meaning that no conviction, caution or bind over is regarded as 'spent.' However, we would also wish to add that for candidates who have criminal convictions this is not necessarily a bar to becoming a student or obtaining a position, and disclosure information will not be used unfairly.

It is important to note that every student wishing to enter the teaching profession will be required to provide the same documentation and disclosure form, regardless of which institution you choose.  However, each institution will have its own policies and procedures on how, and when, this information is provided.

What Happens Now?

Part of the CRB process requires you to provide original documentation to prove who you are and where you live.  Canterbury Christ Church University does not want you at any time to post this documentation to us as we are unable to guarantee the safe keeping of these items.

Please follow the instructions attached concerning the documents required.
