Complex Special Needs
Complex Special Needs tells the story of two students with very different needs, Kathryn and Naomi. Kathryn is dysphasic, with cognitive and memory problems. Naomi is diabetic and has visual and hearing impairments. The programme explores how the SEN department at Sackville Community College facilitates their inclusion and learning.

Special Needs ~ EBD ~ Preparing to Leave
According to Ofsted, Cuckmere House Special School "significantly enhances the life chances of its students". This programme explores how the school helps EBD students prepare for an independent and successful future and talks to students about life beyond school. What can mainstream schools learn from their approach? Cuckmere House provides a safe and secure environment for students with severe emotional and behavioural difficulties. The programmes focuses on students like Steven and Kyle in Year 11 who hope to join the army after their GCSEs.

Secondary TAs ~ From Support to SENCO
At The Deanery High School in Wigan, Janine Priest is the student support manager. From a brand new purpose-built complex, she runs a department of eight learning support assistants and one part-time administrator. Janine joined The Deanery nine years ago as a part-time admin assistant in the special needs department, just after she finished her A-levels and has worked her way up, starting as supply cover, moving on to TA and senior TA, through to SENCO.

Supporting Dyslexics
Every year the dyslexic students at Harris City Technology College, gain between 70 and 80 per cent of five or more top GCSE passes. This programme investigates what's behind the success of this south east London school, and offers practical strategies to help teachers in other schools identify dyslexic pupils and enable them to achieve in a mainstream classroom environment.

The Role of the Teaching Assistant
Since 1998 primary and secondary schools have experienced an unprecedented amount of reform to raise standards of pupil performance. Over the same period, schools have chosen to employ increasing numbers of TAs, to support the delivery of quality teaching and a modern curriculum. It is encouraging to note the ample evidence from research and inspection that many TAs are helping to raise standards in the classrooms in which they work.

Special Educational Needs
Children who experience more difficulty than their peers accessing the curriculum and who, in order to make adequate progress, need support in excess of, or different from, that normally provided in the classroom are considered to have a Special Educational Need (SEN).
