Professional Knowledge and Understanding
Professional knowledge and understanding standards relate to the responsibilities that a teacher has to ensure that teaching and learning occurs effectively for every pupil in the class. This ranges from understanding of the curriculum and target subject, to the application of literacy, numeracy and ICT within all subjects. Improvement can result from the teacher’s own assessments of the effectiveness of their teaching, and enable each student to reach their personal learning potential.
These standards are also concerned with the celebration of diversity within each class. This focus on the individual should encourage the teacher to understand personal circumstances, and where necessary involve appropriate colleagues for support.
