The group represents a range of professional practice across departments, with an interest in student learning, professional practice but also of change and transitional processes in people's lives. Those who have attended meetings have discussed the potential of using narrative in practice, in career education and guidance, in the 'classroom' – across age groups as ways of engaging / enlivening teaching and learning and when working with young children in a clinical setting. Thus the interest relates to biography and narrative in both practice and research on practice and processes of learning and experiences of change.
The group have agreed a contract of working together. In summary, the meetings will provide an opportunity for developing and supporting research from an initial idea through to execution and publication. We have agreed that (within the broad theme) narrative can include approaches to research that encompass life history, biography and auto/biography, autoethnography, literary explorations, the use of images and exploration through drama and other creative methods. We also seek to understand in interdisciplinary ways, using, for instance, psychological, sociological and literary frames, as well as educational. Future meetings will include the presentation of conference papers from members of the group; mentoring to support research activity and publication; seminars; paired activity to experience different methods and writing workshops. There will also be opportunities to join with other themed groups for shared activities.
The theme co-ordinator is Dr Hazel Reid.
