New Opportunities for Research in Post-Compulsory Education, Higher Education, Adult and Lifelong Learning

There are now opportunities to research - full and part-time - and to register for the degrees of MPhil and PhD in the Department of Post-Compulsory Education and Training.

The broad field of post-compulsory education and training, including higher, adult and lifelong learning, has developed into a crucial area of policy and practice as well as becoming a major field of research interest and enquiry. The Department of Post-Compulsory Education and Training, in conjunction with the Centre for Educational Research, has decided to develop more opportunities for research into varied aspects of this broad field. Applications are invited from suitable people to register for an MPhil/PhD in the Department. They can choose a topic in further and adult education, in training, in higher education, in continuing professional development, in career development and guidance; health education, medical education as well as lifelong learning, both formal and informal. Would-be candidates will normally have a MASTERS degree and or a first degree and professional qualifications and be committed to interrogating some aspect of their field OR practice in systematic and critically reflective ways.

What would study lead to?

Students are registered initially for the degree of MPhil, but may then transfer, having met specified requirements, to the degree of PhD. These degrees complement other provision in the Department and offer a progression route for those who, for instance, have completed an MA programme, or equivalent, in the College or elsewhere and want to research a particular topic in greater depth.

Can I study full and part-time?

Yes, the College allows students to register on a part or full-time basis. Research Studentships can also be applied for, in the case of full-time applicants. These are normally advertised early in the New Year.

How do I apply? Where can I find out more?
