The DfE Extending Learning Opportunities: a framework for self-evaluation in Study Support (ELO)  2009 (revised 2011)

The DfE Extending Learning Opportunities: a framework for self-evaluation in Study Support (ELO), has recently been revised and is now available to download or hard copies can be obtained from the QiSS office. The ELO builds on the success of the Study Support Code of Practice.  It retains many of its strengths, for example key themes by which to gather evidence of high quality Study Support and updates these and the way they are grouped to reflect changes in practice and ethos that are now clear in the more integrated approach to Study Support that many educational providers now adopt.  It also includes the First Steps programme that can be used to assist centres who are not ready for the more formal recognition.

 The Process

  • The School,Centre or Organisation uses the Extended Learning Opportunities (ELO) to plan, develop and self-evaluate its study support provision, ideally as part of a local Network, and supported by a Critical Friend.
  • Each School,Centre or Organisation is required to produce a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates that it meets the standards for each section of the ELO, at one of three levels – Emerged, Established and Advanced. A 'quality award' is gained at each level.
  • A 'Self-evaluation Document' is completed and added to the portfolio.
  • The evidence is then presented to peers for scrutiny at a Recognition where recommendation for recognition is made to QiSS.
