Benefits of the Scheme

For Schools:

  • It provides a framework and an outcome for institutional self-evaluation and the development of key staff as 'reflective practitioners'.
  • It provides a mechanism for quality assurance and evidence that can be made available to external agencies including LAs and Ofsted.
  • It provides opportunities for collaboration with other schools and centres and is a means of sharing good practice.

'The SAT Key Stage 2 tests in both maths and English have shown a massive improvement since the start of the study support programme. The English results improved by 43% over the 1999-2001 period.' (a school in Durham)

For LAs:

  • It is a framework for strategic development across the LA of partnerships with community groups, business, arts and sports organisations.
  • The feedback inherent in the process is valuable in shaping development planning.
  • It provides a structure for sharing good practice between the schools in one authority and schools in other authorities.
  • It is valuable for schools' thinking as they move towards "Extended Schools" status.

'Gaining QiSS Advanced recognition has opened many new doors for our scheme. It enables us to approach external funders with clear, independently-assessed, evidence that we offer a quality product which has a measurable impact on participants. The QiSS process has been key to our developmental planning process as it has enabled us to meet with other providers and share best practice, as well as allowing us to highlight the varied benefits Study Support offers its participants'
(Kent Children's University)

'Using the QiSS process helped the school to clarify the strategic place of Study Support within our school ethos and make explicit links to the School Improvement Plan.'
