The Department offers a portfolio of courses which have been specifically designed and developed to meet the changes and challenges within the lifelong learning sector.
Over 1,000 professionals, from further, higher and adult education; from the fire and police services; from community and health organisations and other work-based settings, find the course to suit their personal and vocational needs within our department every year.
The range of our programme offer is described below; but the most important element of our work in the field has always been our total commitment to encouraging learners to strive to reach their full potential in both personal and professional terms.
Our teacher training programmes
Are you currently a tutor working within the lifelong learning sector and wishing to gain qualified teaching status?
Working in collaboration with a range of further and adult education colleges, we can offer you a modularised programme which will suit your needs whether you are looking for an initial teaching award, a certificate or a diploma leading towards achieving qualified teaching status within the learning sector.
Are you a graduate wishing to begin a new teaching career but not sure whether you would like to work in secondary or further and adult education?
We can offer you our post-graduate certificate course in Lifelong Learning
Are you specifically interested in exploring, or currently working with 14-19 provision?
Our department is currently developing new approaches in this area, so get in touch with us to explore the range of possibilities.
Our degree programmes
Would you like to study for a part-time degree but wish to base your learning on your work-place?
Find out about our Foundation Degree in Lifelong Learning and gain credits for combining your workplace experience with the theoretical underpinning to deepen your understanding and improve your professional practice.
Would you like to study for a part-time degree and are particularly interested in learning about the broader world of lifelong learning?
Our new part-time BA in Lifelong Learning aims to support and stimulate participants so that they become more reflective about their practice and experience, and more able to use their academic, professional and interpersonal skills to adapt to, or instigate, change with confidence and integrity. The programme will also present students with a range of perspectives and resources which aims to enhance professional energy and creativity. In short, we shall explore, and interrogate, issues of academic, personal and professional interest found under the broad umbrella of lifelong learning.
Perhaps you already hold a first degree, or professional equivalent, and wish to study at Masters Level?
Our part-time MA in Lifelong Education and Professional Practice is aimed at those who are interested in developing their understanding of the impact that current educational and political agendas are having within the wider educational arena. The degree offers a timely critique of much of the rhetoric surrounding the imperatives and implementation of 'lifelong learning' whilst encouraging a robust defence of our professional values as trainers and educators.
Our Skills for Life Courses
Are you looking to improve your abilities as Skills for Life practitioners? Our part-time Certificates in Adult Literacy and Adult Numeracy have been developed to help you improve your teaching practice. They will also help you to understand, and to be able to work with, the legislative changes which are having such a profound impact upon our professional lives.
Continuing Professional Development
Wherever you work, in the field of lifelong learning, you will be looking for help to find the best possible range of Continuing Professional Development courses to suit your particular needs. All of our programmes within the department are situated within an interlocking framework which can provide you with access and pathways to a fully accredited certificate, diploma or degree. Or, you might only wish to 'top up' your current levels of knowledge and opt for a 'stand-alone' module to keep you up-to-date with the latest changes and legislative practices. Our members of staff will help you try to find the best possible pathway, and to place you on the most suitable course either on campus at the University or with one of our partner institutions.
