Malaysia Project
Canterbury Christ Church University is currently undertaking a four year collaboration project which is being developed as a result of a successful bid to the Teacher Education Division of the Malaysian Government.
The Malaysian Ministry of Education, Teacher Education Division (TED) is the department within the government which has responsibility for teacher education.
In order to support the achievement of the national target to become a ‘developed country’, the TED has been charged with the task of raising the training of primary school teachers to degree level. Currently primary teachers are trained in Teacher Training Institutions (TTIs).
Canterbury Christ Church University is working in collaboration with two of these TTIs – Institut Perguruan Kuala Terengganu (IPKT) (science specialism) which is based in Kuala Terengganu, in the north of the country, and the second Institute is Institut Perguruan Tun Hussein Onn (IPTHO) (design and technology specialism) which is based in Batu Pahat, Johor Bahru, which is in the south of Malaysia, close to Singapore.
This programme is being staffed from Canterbury Christ Church University by experienced primary teacher educators who are required to travel to Malaysia to work collaboratively with our Malaysian tutor colleagues. There will also be return visits to the UK by our Malaysian tutor colleagues.
Three other Universities were also successful in their bid to be part of this project; The University of Hertfordshire in the UK (Mary Read) and Deakin University (Prof Shirley Grundy) and Queensland University of Technology (Bob Eliot) in Australia. These 3 other Universities are working in collaboration with other TTIs within Malaysia.
To carry out this work over the next 4 years, Canterbury Christ Church University will be making trips to Malaysia on a regular basis. These trips vary from one to two weeks at a time. Staff numbers vary from 2 up to 10 people per trip, with visits planned every other month, to carry out collaborative teaching, staff development, moderation and marking, etc. Years 2, 3 and 4 will have similar trips but the number of visits will slightly diminish over the years as the course progresses.
