Course Description

The aim of this course is to introduce students to sport (and exercise) science, and allow students to investigate the connections between their own athletic experience and the scientific study of sport. A number of key strands of Sport and Exercise science will be presented. Students will engage in a range of practical, lecture and seminar based sessions, and utilise an array of scientific equipment to examine sport in a hands on and systematic manner. Many sessions will take place in 'state of the art' sports laboratories at the University campus.

The course will primarily focus upon elite sport, and the nature of competing at such a level. Specific reference will be drawn to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and the Olympic Games in London in 2012. Student tasks will include a reflection and discussion of relevant issues related to the 2010 FIFA World Cup and also the planning, politics and potential impacts of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

A secondary focus of the course will be related to the connections between such large scale international sporting events, exercise and the health of the nation, with student tasks focusing on ways in which the population can be 'encouraged' to exercise for both health and/or enjoyment

A sound sporting ability is not essential, but students will require a passion and enthusiasm for sport, and a willingness to get involved in the practical elements of the course.
