The overall pattern of the Master’s Degree

Stage 1Postgraduate Certificate in 3 parts/3 assignments.

This is usually over 3 terms and involves 3 modules ...

Module 1 - Orientation to Master’s work. Establishing your interests and study skills in reflective professional practice and participant research.
Module 2 - Specialist area of focus depending on participant’s own interests and professional situation.
Module 3 – Applying specialist knowledge gained and research/enquiry skills to whole school change and approaches supporting colleagues.


Stage 2Postgraduate Diploma in 3 parts/3 assignments.

This is usually over 3 terms and involves 3 modules with personal tutorial support and some evening group seminars.

Modules 1 and 2Constructing Evidence Based Practice. Following up their own areas for enquiry and research each student develops their enquiry and project development skills through building a Portfolio. These will be of professional interest to the participant but also focused on school/service areas for development.

Module 3Extension of previous knowledge in Stages 1 and 2 and may involve further specialist research, international work, exploring the psychology of ‘Enabling Learning’ and further project development around the participant’s own working situation.


Stage 3MA Research Dissertation.

This is the student’s own particular research, identified in conjunction with the tutor and relevant to a range of areas of professional practice and personal development that are meaningful to the student in his or her working context. Normally over 1 to 2 years with personal tutorial support and some evening group seminars.
 

Who is it for?

This Masters programme is intended for people from a variety of professional, voluntary and vocational backgrounds who work to include children, young people and adults who experience some form of difficulty in participating or engaging with the learning opportunities that are on offer. It also seeks to develop good practice and a positive ethos in education generally, institutions as a whole and other supportive or developmental services or agencies that wish to increase active participation; social, emotional and educational engagement and thus encourage lifelong learning.

 

 

What will I do?

Students are encouraged to assimilate new knowledge, undertake practical research and enquiry and encompass forward looking concepts and constructs based on theory, principles gleaned from research and from critically reviewing practical experience.

What will I get?

The MA may be completed in:

  • 1 year full-time;
  • 3 years minimum and 6 years maximum part-time – any variations on this are in Consultation with the Programme Director.

There is a choice of courses available. Stage 1 can be completed through:

  • a one year 60 credit course;
  • an individualised pathway in 3 x 20 credit courses (one of which would be Orientation).

One compulsory course at Stage 1 and one at Stage 2 must be completed. Each Stage is worth 60 Masters degree credits.

The award of Postgraduate Diploma requires 120 Masters level credits and the award of Masters Degree in Enabling Learning, Inclusion and Institutional Development requires 180 Masters level credits. Students may interrupt or transfer credits at any stage of the programme.
