Introduction

This programme of study has been developed to meet the needs of those who have already completed an introductory course in supervision (for example the Certificate in Supervision Studies), and who want to develop their skills and knowledge in relation to their supervisory role within a guidance agency.

The Advanced Certificate in Supervision will build on the learning and skills developed in the Certificate in Supervision Studies. In particular, it will introduce the concept of supervision in the group context which is not addressed in the Certificate programme. It will also explore in depth the theoretical underpinning to multicultural approaches in supervision as well as further developing the knowledge and understanding of the social policy context in which supervision is practiced (e.g. Every Child Matters and Youth Matters). For example, emphasis will be placed on the need for professionals to 'keep safe' their clients and themselves, and issues around supporting practitioners with mental health difficulties will be explored. 

Students will also have the opportunity to extend their repertoires of skills. Particular emphasis will be placed on the use of advanced skills and techniques in supervision, both in the one to one and group context.

Illustrated Course Outline

The content of the programme seeks to provide participants with the opportunity to reflect on the advanced skills, knowledge and values required to deliver effective supervision in both one to one and group contexts. The course uses a range of methods including group discussion, simulation, video clips, role play, case studies as well as input from tutors. In addition, all students are provided with a core text, included in the course fee, which focuses on key concepts in supervision drawn from academic, practitioner and organisational perspectives.

Day One - Orientation to the course and review of supervision

Including an initial self assessment activity which encourages students to reflect on their current practice – the theory, concepts, knowledge and skills which underpin their work in supervision.

Day Two - Supervision - the policy context: Keeping Safe (ethics, boundaries and confidentiality):

The current policy context of Every Child Matters and Youth Matters will be critically evaluated. Particular attention will be paid to the need to 'keep safe' practitioners and clients, and this will include focusing on supporting staff who are working with clients who have mental health difficulties or are at risk.

Day Three - One-to-one supervision-theory, concepts and advanced skills:

The theory underpinning one to one supervision will be evaluated. Students will reflect on approaches, including client centred and transactional analysis, and will look at developmental models such as Stoltenberg and Delworth and process models such as Hawkins and Shohet. Particular attention will be paid to the development of advanced supervisory skills.

Day Four - Group supervision - theory concepts and skills:

The purpose and functions of group supervision will be examined. Attention will be paid to issues of group dynamics and power within group settings. Again, students will have the opportunity to develop group supervision skills.

Day Five - Anti-oppressive and multi-cultural approaches to supervision:

Using creative methods in supervisory practice – exploring knowledge and skills: The focus will be on Thompson's anti-oppressive approach to supervision and various issues around multi-culturalism within supervision will be explored. A model for working sensitively in a multi-cultural supervision context will be analysed. In addition, students will be given the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills of creative methods in supervision such as 'sculpting', art work and role play.

Day Six - Reflective practice - in and on supervision:

Models of reflective practice will be evaluated and students will be given the opportunity to undertake a reflective activity based on their own supervisory practice and their learning from the course

Where is the course taught?

The course may either be taught from a University campus or from a local venue.

How is the course delivered?

This is a taught course which also combines an important element of individual study and work based learning.

Attendance

Attendance at all sessions is important and there is an attendance requirement for successful completion of the course.

Admission criteria

  • The entry requirements for the course are as follows:
    Students should have successfully completed the Certificate in Supervision Studies

  Or

  • Students should have considerable experience and knowledge of supervision.  Students without a formal supervision qualification will undergo a selection interview

All Students should hold a relevant professional qualification

How is the course assessed and accredited?

The course begins with students undertaking a self assessment activity. Students are encouraged to reflect on their development and learning throughout the duration of the course. Students will be required to complete a 5000 word assignment.

What resources will I need?

Students will be issued with a course text and a course handbook. Students will also be required to have access to supervisees in their work context (both one to one supervision and group supervision).

Other features of the course

Students will be encouraged to identify a peer supervisor from within the course group who they will work with throughout the duration of the course. This informal supervisory relationship will be reciprocal and it will provide an invaluable opportunity to practise the skills of supervision in a safe environment.

Fees

For the Academic Year 2011-12, generally courses are organised by employers and a fee of £8,915 per course will apply (not per participant); the individual student cost is £605. The usual cohort size is 22. The course fees include all teaching, tutorial support, course materials and additional handouts.

Universities in England may no longer receive funding from the Government for students (excluding Foundation degrees) who wish to study but who already hold a qualification which is at an equivalent or higher level. Fees for these students will be charged at the higher ELQ fee listed below.

Therefore, the ELQ fee for a course size of 22 will be £14,765 (not per participant). The individual ELQ student cost fee is £995.
