Certificate in Careers Education and Guidance
Introduction
Canterbury Christ Church University has a long tradition in providing accredited courses for staff involved in delivering and managing careers education and guidance. In September 2005, the University launched a new e-learning course to prepare staff for the planned changes to the curriculum and young people's services in 2006-2008. The course was also written to meet the requirements of the national framework for professional qualifications in CEG in England. The course has since been reviewed and re-approved after six successful years and is a focused course reflecting the current needs of practices in the sector.
Who is the course for?
The course will be relevant to careers co-ordinators at all levels of experience as well as teachers and other staff who actively support careers work in schools and colleges.
What does the course cover?
The course contains 2 modules. Each module contains four units of work:
Module 1 Understanding Careers Education & Guidance
In this first module you will lay the foundations of understanding that the rest of the course will build upon. You will read about the key theoretical concepts of career learning and development and about the context that this learning takes place in: the needs of young people and the rapidly changing labour market.
Module 2 Providing Careers Education & Guidance
In this second module you will begin to put some of what you have learnt into practice by considering how career learning can be achieved in the curriculum or within your own work setting. Completion of the assignment for this module will award you the Certificate in Careers Education and Guidance and 20 credits at level 6.
How is the course delivered and supported?
The core course and other learning materials are accessed through Blackboard, an e-learning platform hosted by the University. The e-learning platform gives access to a wide range of other supporting source materials, including library resources, electronic books and journals, notice boards, discussion groups, web-links and more.
Participants will receive support from a University tutor. Participants may also be able to join a local support group led by a careers education and guidance tutor in their area who will provide additional support and networking opportunities.
How long will the course take?
The Certificate should take up to a maximum of 40 weeks based on 5 hours' study and situated learning per week, although it is anticipated that most people will complete it within 30 weeks.
How will I be assessed?
You will be asked to write one assignment of 2500 words for each module. The assignments are closely related to what you are doing in the school or college where you work and will help you to reflect on your professional practice. The work is assessed at Level 6 (formerly Higher Education (HE) Level 3) and is equivalent to work set during the final year of undergraduate level study. You have the option of including part of your on-line discussions in your assignment.
What will I receive if I am successful?
You will receive a University Certificate worth 20 credits at Level 6, following successful completion of the Certificate.
What are the requirements?
If you have not studied at Level 6 before, you will be asked to complete a short piece of work to demonstrate that you can cope with study at this level. You will need access to a computer with internet connection.
What does the course cost?
The course fees for the academic year 2011-12 are £380 for the Certificate.
Universities in England may no longer receive funding from the Government for students (excluding Foundation degrees) who wish to study but who already hold a qualification which is at an equivalent or higher level. Fees for these students will be charged at the higher ELQ fee listed below.
Therefore, the ELQ fee for the academic year 2011-12 are £890 for the Certificate.
