One of The Promise Foundation’s (TPF) objectives is related to career counselling and livelihood planning for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Under Gideon’s leadership TPF has been involved for the last 18 years in researching career development in the Indian and developing world context. This research has led to the development of culture specific career counselling interventions that have been designed to suit the needs of young people in India and other parts of the developing world. Gideon’s specialisation is focused on developing counselling techniques that are culture resonant. He is presently working on using the Story as a counselling technique.
TPF has focused on building the knowledge base and developing human resources for the area of Career Psychology for India and the region. Following a national survey and consultation TPF developed the Jiva approach to career counselling and livelihood planning. A core component of the Jiva project is the M.Phil in Career Psychology, validated in partnership with the Martin Luther Christian University in India. Dr Hazel Reid for The Centre for Career and Personal Development has worked with Gideon to design, develop and teach a Reflective Professional Development module for the M.Phil in India. Knowledge transfer between the Promise Foundation and The Centre for Career and Personal Development will continue, with Gideon continuing to give guest lectures in the UK. Gideon and Hazel will also explore the potential to extend the existing M.Phil Career Psychology, with the aim of building the academy for career counselling in India and the region. An important recent accomplishment was the Jiva International Conference hosted by The Promise Foundation and the International Association for Educational and Vocational Guidance. The Centre for Career and Personal Development was the Academic Partner with TPF for this important event.
