If you are interested in following a part-time degree programme then you should contact the Admissions and Recruitment Department who will be able to keep you up-to-date with subject availability.

The Part-time Degree Programme Offered at Canterbury

Mature student studying in libraryMost subjects in the Single and Joint/Combined Honours section of the prospectus are available for the daytime part-time degree. Descriptions of subjects are given on their pages and you must check individual programme entries to see if a part-time route is available.

It is not currently possible to follow the BSc (Honours) programmes in Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Social Work or Medical Imaging by part-time study. The three year full-time BA (Hons) Primary Education is not offered on a part-time basis. However, there is a part-time route via the Foundation Degree in Child and Youth Studies and the two year part-time top-up programme in Primary Education.

Normally students take five or six years to complete their degree programme. There is no closing date for applications to the part-time day degree programme. However, potential students are encouraged to complete their application form as soon as possible and no later than 1st August 2007.

However, if students combine Professional Development (by Work Based Learning) with another subject of their choice, the time needed to complete a degree can be reduced to four years. A Foundation Degree is offered over 38 months. See here for more details.

At the end of the first two years of part-time study a successful student is eligible for the award of a Certificate of Higher Education if they decide to end their studies. At the end of the fourth year of part-time study, successful students are eligible for a Diploma of Higher Education.

Students wishing to change from part-time to full-time study can do so after the first two years of part-time study are passed successfully. Students with relevant advanced qualifications (e.g. HND or Certificate in Education) may be eligible for exemption from the first year or two of the part-time degree or Foundation Degree.

Students hoping to apply for a course of initial teacher training (i.e. the Postgraduate Certificate in Education) following the completion of their degree must ensure that their degree studies include a National Curriculum subject (e.g. Art, Early Childhood Studies (for Primary), English, History, Geography, Music, Religious Studies, Science or Sport Science). See also here.

There are a wide range of part-time study opportunities available at the Campus at degree, diploma and certificate level as well as a range of short courses.

Application forms for part-time degree programmes can be downloaded from http://www.canterbury.ac.uk/courses/vacancies/. They can also be obtained from the Admissions and Recruitment Department, Canterbury Christ Church University, North Holmes Road, Canterbury, CT1 1QU. Telephone: 01227 782900 or Email: admissions@canterbury.ac.uk

Entry to the part-time degree programmes are generally the same as those for the full-time degree. Each programme in this prospectus has a section on entry requirements and there is also information on the entry requirements page. However, the University welcomes applications from mature students who may not have the formal qualifications required. Students in this category may be invited in and, subject to a satisfactory interview, can be admitted onto the part-time degree programme. However, where there are nationally set entry requirements for particular programmes, all students must have these before commencing the programme.

  Fees

The fees for the part-time degree programmes starting in September 2008 will not be set until early in the 2007/2008 academic year. Tuition fee levels are reviewed annually and are likely to rise each year. Students who wish to pay these fees in four monthly instalments over the first four months of the course can do so. Students intending to pay by instalments must notify the University of their decision before registration. Fees can be paid by credit card if preferred.

The University is part of the Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme and therefore can grant exemption from certain courses on the basis of relevant qualifications gained elsewhere. Passes in courses undertaken as part of the degree at the University will also have currency at other institutions participating in this scheme.

The University received the authority to award its own degrees from the Privy Council in 1995. Part-time students will, on successful completion of the degree, receive a Canterbury Christ Church University award.

A large number of people decide to take a first degree and then follow a one year Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) course to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Part-time students have progressed from the University’s undergraduate programmes onto the PGCE. However, this progression is not an automatic right. To gain a place on a PGCE course all applicants must successfully pass the interview stage and Canterbury Christ Church applicants compete equally with graduates from other institutions. Applicants who may wish to apply for one of our PGCEs should ensure that 50% of their degree includes a national curriculum subject – Art, English, French, Geography, History, Music, Religious Studies, Science, or Sport Science.
