Student Development

Photo of student reading a magazineStudent Development is about helping yourself, helping the University or helping the community. Whichever is your priority there are opportunities to develop your skills at Canterbury Christ Church.

Embarking upon any of our programmes not only offers you the opportunity to increase your knowledge and understanding of a particular subject/profession or range of subjects, but also the chance to develop personally through the wide range of extracurricular activities on offer.

Buddies Scheme – a chance to help international students settle into the UK and the University way of life.

Chaplaincy – as well as participating in acts of worship in the Chapel, there are other opportunities to get involved in charitable activities through the Dean of Chapel’s Office.

Erasmus – take a term or year abroad to study – ask the International Office for further information.

Duke of Edinburgh Awards – details are available from the Careers and Student Development Office.

Hall of Residence Wardens – are recruited annually to take on certain responsibilities in the University halls. Details are available from the Accommodation Office.

International Office – excursions and social activities are open to all students interested in seeing more of the UK and Europe.

Library Services Workshops – are run to ensure you make maximum use of the Library’s facilities – ask at the enquiries desk in the Library.

Media – the Students’ Union supports the student-run magazine, and is also involved in the local student-led FM radio station, the first of its kind in the country.

Mentoring – some subjects involve final year students in mentoring first years, something to investigate at the end of your second year.

Music – the Music Department’s many events and activities are made available to all students by contacting the Departmental Secretary – everything from Salsa to singing in a choir.

Part-time Work – the University JobShop and the related web pages carry local vacancies for students available to work up to 15 hours per week.

Sports Courses and Awards – the Sports and Recreation Officer runs a variety of sports courses and coaching awards offering national recognition.

Staff and Student Liaison – you could be your year representative with your subject department helping to develop your self-confidence and communication skills.

Student Ambassador Scheme – opportunities for you to receive training in presentation skills in return for promoting the University in schools in Kent and Medway.

Students’ Union – you could run for office, help with RAG events, join a society or sports team or even start one yourself – contact the Students’ Union for details and don’t miss Freshers Weeks.

Voluntary Work – the Careers and Student Development Office has extensive information about voluntary work in the local community as well as national and international schemes.
