Courses and Prospectus - Student Support

Services for Students

Students discussing in a large roomCanterbury Christ Church will support you throughout your University life. You will have a tutor in your academic department who acts as an initial point of contact for support and guidance. There are also specific central support services, offering further help and advice, overseen by the office of the Director of Student Support and where you will find friendly staff available to guide you in the right direction.

Our close-knit friendly community goes a long way to ensuring the well-being of our students. We recognise, however, that sometimes you may need some additional advice and support to enable you to manage your studies and personal life effectively. For this reason we provide a variety of means of support for you throughout your student life.

  Tutors

You will have a tutor in your academic department who is someone you can go to for support and guidance on any matter that may be affecting your progress. You will be informed who your tutor is and you will have the opportunity to meet them when you start your programme. You are likely to have regular contact with this Tutor during your first year, but don’t forget that they will be available throughout your student undergraduate career.

In addition to the help and support available in your academic department, there is a wide range of support services that can offer you further specialist help and advice. The Director of Student Services has overall responsibility for these central support services, which help provide for your pastoral and welfare, health, disability and equal opportunity, as well as study support, needs.

These services are conveniently located together in the Erasmus Building. There are friendly staff available in the Student Services reception who and can assist with any questions or concerns which you may have, and can guide you in the right direction.

The Chapel is a place of friendship, rest and prayer at the heart of the University. Everyone is welcome to its services and the many other Chapel activities that are organised throughout the year. The Dean of Chapel and Chaplain are always available in complete confidence, to see members of the University about any matter.

The Dean of Chapel and Chaplain work closely with the Christian Union who organise a number of social events throughout the year as well as opportunities for Christians of varying styles and understanding to meet together for prayer and worship.

It is important that you look after your health when you are a student. You should make sure you have had all your regular immunisations (such as MMR) before you come to university, and you should register with a local doctor if you relocate to study at Canterbury Christ Church. At our Canterbury Campus, the staff in the Health Office will help you register with a local GP who provides a full range of NHS services in a modern health centre close to the University’s main buildings. Students at our other campuses are helped by our Campus Tutors to register with a convenient GP practice. Health information and advice is provided by staff at our campus and is readily available on our website.

Entering Higher Education is a major life change for most students. Leaving home and friends, as well as adjusting to a new academic and social environment, can present quite a challenge. The Student Counselling Service provides you with an opportunity to explore these situations, and any other personal anxieties and emotional concerns that you may have. The Counselling Service is staffed by professionally trained and experienced counsellors, who are registered practitioners with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. As well as working individually with you, the Counselling Service offers workshops, from time to time, on matters such as stress management, exam anxiety, assertiveness etc. and also organises support groups for students experiencing difficulties.

We can provide you with help and guidance on a wide range of issues, including welfare and pastoral issues as well as financial matters.

Success in Higher Education, perhaps more so now than ever before, involves coping not only with the academic demands of your chosen programme, but also with the very real challenges of living on a student income.

The Student Advisers administer various government discretionary support funds to assist part-time and full-time students experiencing financial hardship. Undergraduate and postgraduate students are eligible to apply for financial support which is means-tested and is dependent on individual circumstances. There is also help available on financial planning and money management.

The Student Advisers are also able to help with information and advice on child care. Canterbury Christ Church owns the premises of Canterbury Day Nursery, which are just a few minutes walk from the main Canterbury Campus. A number of places at the Nursery are guaranteed for students and staff. There is a close association with the Nursery, including representation on the management committee. The Canterbury Day Nursery also provides a half-term play scheme and an after-school club for children aged 5-11. For further information please contact the Student Advisers (01227 782783) or the Manager of Canterbury Day Nursery (01227 454557). However, most student parents require childcare close to where they live, and the Student Advisers can help you find out about other local childcare that best meets your needs.

The University’s Disability and Equal Opportunities Adviser for students is available to support and assist students with disabilities and learning difficulties, including dyslexia. She is able to help disabled students obtain support for their needs within the University and apply for appropriate government funding from the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA). If you are a disabled student, the Disability and Equal Opportunities Adviser will work with you to access any assistance to which you may be entitled. She also has a role in supporting students in respect of all aspects of Equal Opportunities (including Race Equality) matters.
