FOLKESTONE

Introduction

From September 2010, the Department of English and Language Studies will be offering (subject to validation) an exciting new degree pathway in Creative Writing. This pathway will offer a range of modules, allowing students to cover a spectrum of writing. Its scope will be inter-disciplinary – and will include the following elements:

  • Writing Fiction
  • Playwriting
  • Poetry
  • Crossing genre boundaries
  • Life Writing: biography, memoir
  • Kent connections: contemporary writers in the region

All modules will combine study of published texts with intensive practical exercises and group work, allowing students to engage with different writing styles as they work towards establishing their own unique ‘voice’.

The programme builds on the expertise of staff in the Department of English and Language Studies in the areas of contemporary literature, biography and literary language. Assessment will be by a portfolio of creative work, submitted in its final form at the end of the teaching year. In the first year only assessment will also be by examination.
