Vocational Rehabilitation

Postgraduate Certificate
Duration
Part time 12-18 months
Introduction
Vocational Rehabilitation is the process used to help individuals who, following an illness, injury or change in capacity require help to access, maintain or return to employment.
Canterbury Christ Church University is offering one of the few specialised programmes in vocational rehabilitation in the United Kingdom. This programme has been specifically developed to respond to new government initiatives to encourage people with a physical and/or psychosocial illness, disease or disability back into the workplace as well as addressing the drive for better working environments. Work is increasingly recognised as an important factor in promoting health, social inclusion and economic potential.
The Postgraduate Certificate in Vocational Rehabilitation aims to facilitate both qualified health and social care staff and other experienced individuals to develop their professional knowledge and expertise in order to work more effectively with people wanting to return to a fulfilling work life. Delivered at Master’s level, you will develop a critical awareness of current theory and practice and the ability to analyse, synthesise and solve complex problems.
Content and Structure
The programme consists of three modules which are delivered through taught sessions and e-learning. To achieve the award you will be required to study the modules in the prescribed order:
- Orientation (to postgraduate study and interprofessional collaboration)
- Concepts of Vocational Rehabilitation
- Assessment and Intervention Strategies Related to Vocational Rehabilitation
The modules will enable you to explore and analyse the meaning of employment from multiple perspectives such as sociological, philosophical, political and legal. You will use and critically analyse a range of person-centred assessments and interventions to help people gain new or alternative employment or a return to existing work. You will have the opportunity to explore the ergonomics of a healthy work environment and critique current practice. With participants coming from a range of health, social care and private sector professionals, collaborative practice will be actively encouraged.
On successful completion of the programme, you can progress on to do a Master’s degree from the Faculty of Health and Social Care Master’s scheme. Students who progress to a Master’s programme may seek an endorsement in vocational rehabilitation provided 60% of their modules directly relate to vocational rehabilitation.
Students can be registered as Associate Students and can undertake single modules as a part of their continuous professional development as long as they are taken in the specified order.
Programme Delivery
The programme is delivered through presentations, seminars and practical activities supported by el-earning opportunities. You will consider case studies and real life workplace practice. You will be encouraged to draw upon your own professional experience.

Each module is delivered over three months and you will attend for two or three days at a time, for up to a total of eight days per module. The remainder of the programme will be delivered through e-learning and independent study.
