Introduction

PGCE Primary Languages - flags picture

Canterbury Christ Church offers the opportunity to study the PGCE Primary (Full-Time), specialising in Primary Languages. This is in response to the latest Government initiative for every primary school in the country to have a teacher qualified to promote/teach Primary Languages by 2010. During the PGCE programme you will be able to develop a specialism in one of the four languages offered: French, Spanish, Italian or German.

For the vast majority of the time the programme follows the same pattern and requirements as the PGCE Primary Full-Time. However, students following the Primary Languages route will also be expected to undertake an additional portion of their placement time in France, Germany, Spain or Italy (depending on their language). This will take place in the second term of the programme, lasting four weeks. Students will be accommodated and hosted by the country of their language specialism.

As well as sessions on the practical application of languages in the classroom, students following this route will also have taught language enhancement sessions.

**Candidates to the Primary Languages route need to be aware that the course is part of a Training and Development Agency (TDA) project aimed at the development of language and cultural skills of both students and primary aged children. As Primary Languages is becoming statutory at Key Stage 2, the TDA requires that it is only available to students following the 5-11 age group route.
