Why study international business?

There has never been a more exciting time to study international business as it enters a period of dramatic change. The turmoil in the Eurozone countries and the United States as they struggle with burgeoning debt contrasts sharply with the growth in emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRICs), offering new opportunities and challenges. Today’s businesses operate in a dynamic global business environment in which managers have to deal with rapidly changing markets and a climate of tremendous uncertainty. These challenges call for new skills and new thinking as businesses strive to reinvent and innovate. The new MSc International Business prepares students for this new international business arena by addressing issues of culture, politics, and economics, as well as equipping them with the personal attributes and analytical skills required for careers in the international business world.

The MSc International Business has been carefully crafted to reflect the complex, dynamic and multifaceted character of this contemporary subject area. The focus is very much on the development of the person in acquiring the skills and attributes necessary for the leaders, entrepreneurs and policy-makers of tomorrow in management, strategy and decision-making and communication. Students will also develop a clear understanding of the environment in which international businesses operate in terms of economics, finance and governance, as well as politics and culture. Research methods runs through the whole programme as preparation for the dissertation in Term 3. The dissertation provides an opportunity for students to set themselves apart and demonstrate to potential employers a high level of thinking in a specialist area. This work is supported and supervised by experienced, research active members of staff, and may lead to publication.

Students who specialise in either marketing or finance through electives and a dissertation in these areas may be awarded the MSc International Business with Marketing or and MSc International Business with Finance.

As well as a strong international element, the programme has active practitioner involvement and brings real life professional and business situations into the classroom. Students also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of seminars and conferences and benefit for the Business School’s strong links with the City of London.
