Clinical Psychology

About the Course

Level:
Statement of Equivalence

Duration:
Between two and three years part-time

Introduction

This programme enables qualified Psychologists who trained overseas or in another field of applied Psychology to become Chartered Clinical Psychologists in the UK. It is for Psychologists working for NHS Trusts in South East London, Kent and East Sussex and is funded by the local NHS training commissioners. The British Psychological Society (BPS) sets each candidate individual requirements for further supervised clinical practice and academic assessments based on a review of their original training experience. On successful completion a ’Statement of Equivalence’ is issued by the BPS to confirm eligibility to practice as a Chartered Clinical Psychologist in the UK. The programme does not result in any academic award and has a capacity of 20 places at any one time.

Structure of the Programme

Each member of the programme develops their own individualised training plan, setting out how they will complete the training requirements set out for them by the BPS. This usually includes the completion of supervised clinical practice placements within their own NHS Trust or a neighbouring Trust. Candidates may need to complete a large or small scale research project and usually essays and reports of clinical activity, or web based assessments for European candidates.

Across the year progress with the training plan is closely monitored and supported by a member of programme staff who acts as the candidate’s ’Coordinator of Training’, reviews placement experience and assists with academic study. Candidates attend five workshop and tutorial events and a Summer School each year. These assist candidates with completing their academic training requirements and provide learning experiences that equip candidates for work as Clinical Psychologists in the NHS.

Applications

Selection to the programme occurs twice a year and involves the submission of an application form and an interview. Applications to the programme must be supported by the applicant’s manager. Potential candidates should be employed by an NHS Trust in South East London, or by an NHS Trust, private or voluntary health and social care organisation in Kent or East Sussex (see our website for the exact boundaries of the programme). They should also have a statement of additional training requirements from the BPS, and except in exceptional circumstances, these should take no more than two years to complete.
