Course code: QX31
Mode of study: Full time
Location: Canterbury Campus

Introduction

The Secondary (11-18) PGCE in English with Drama and Media is a rigorous and imaginative, innovative and intensive nine month programme preparing graduates for the challenges and rewards of teaching the 11 - 18 age range in the Secondary sector. You will be awarded a PGCE and recommended for Qualified Teacher Status, enabling you to teach in schools.

The course is organised in partnership with schools around Kent and Medway (and towards London), where you spend 24 out of the 36 weeks teaching across two contrasting placements.

Teaching and Learning Methods

For 12 weeks your learning takes place in the University, where you will experience a mixture of imaginative lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops. These will prepare you for professional placement and help you to reflect on professional issues and your own development.

During the 24 weeks on placement, you will learn through a combination of observation, individual, group and whole class teaching, discussions with mentors, attendance at school training events and professional meetings.

Content

Professional Placement – Module 1
Teaching experiences include opportunities to teach at Key Stage 3 (11-14); GCSE, and post -16, including A-level, across the two Secondary schools.

On your two school placements you will work with a Subject Mentor, who provides opportunities to try out particular skills in a safe environment, planning lessons and evaluating performance. You will also be assigned a Professional Mentor, who will be able to offer advice about generic and whole school issues.

Professional Studies – Module 2
Professional Studies sessions aim to inform you about generic aspects of professional practice including pastoral care, behaviour management, meeting the needs of individual pupils and groups, additional educational needs, and pupil assessment.

Curriculum Studies in English with Drama and Media Studies - Module 3
With the emphasis on creatively planning for teaching and learning, you will explore the key areas of the English curriculum in schools, namely reading, writing, and speaking and listening. You will develop strategies for differentiation and progression and your own creativity and subject knowledge. Through seminar work and peer presentation, you will encounter English at Key Stage 3; GCSE / Key Stage 4; and at A-level. Discussing literature and language; prose, poetry, drama and oracy, you will engage in the current exciting range of children’s literature; key texts from the literary canon, non-fiction, and media, film, and drama texts, both within the English classroom, and as discrete subjects in themselves.
