PGCE in Art and Design (11-18)

Course code: W1X1
Mode of study: Full time
Location: Canterbury Campus

Introduction

The 11-18 in Art and Design is a rigorous and imaginative, innovative and intensive nine month programme preparing graduates for the challenges and rewards of teaching Art and Design within the Secondary sector in the artist/teacher model. You will be awarded a PGCE and recommended for Qualified Teacher Status, enabling you to teach in schools.

The course is organised in partnership with schools around Kent and Medway (and towards London), where you spend 24 out of the 36 weeks teaching across two contrasting placements.

Teaching and Learning Methods

For 12 weeks your learning takes place in the University, where you will experience a mixture of imaginative lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops and focused study visits. These will prepare you for professional placement and help you to reflect on professional issues and your own development.

During the 24 weeks on placement, you will learn through a combination of observation, collaborative and solo teaching of groups, discussions with mentors, attendance at school training events and professional meetings.

Content

Professional Placement – Module 1
Teaching experiences offer opportunities to teach at Key Stage 3, GCSE, and post -16, including A-level, across the two Secondary schools.

Professional Studies – Module 2
Professional Studies sessions aim to inform you about generic aspects of professional practice including pastoral care, behaviour management, meeting the needs of individual pupils and groups, additional educational needs, and pupil assessment.

Curriculum Studies in Art and Design - Module 3
These involve work within two related strands: practical and concept-based workshops/study visits and lectures/seminars which together enable you to develop a clear personal rationale and practical strategies for creatively planning and resourcing differentiated teaching and learning in art and design.

In practical workshops you examine and explore key concepts that underpin the various curricula and specifications for Art and Design. These sessions enable you to relate your experiences and expertise to the needs of learners by inquiring into and challenging your own assumptions and patterns of thinking and working.

You continue to make work, read widely and share your expertise, views, research and experiences through group seminars and peer teaching and presentations. Focused study visits make use of local and regional sites of interest and importance, galleries and museums and also Venice.

An exhibition at the Sidney Cooper Gallery in Canterbury in June/July celebrates your creative practice and that of the learners you have worked with.
