PGCE in PE (11-18)
Course code: C6XC
Mode of study: Full time
Location: Canterbury Campus
Introduction
The 11-18 PGCE in Physical Education is a nine-month programme, which prepares graduates for teaching the 11-18 age range in the Secondary sector. On completion of the course you will be awarded a PGCE and recommended for Qualified Teacher Status.
The course is organised in partnership with schools around Kent and Medway where you will spend 24 out of the 36 weeks learning to teach in two contrasting schools under the supervision of an experienced teacher who will act as a mentor.
Teaching and Learning Methods
The University based programme lasts for 12 weeks and consists of a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical sessions. The principle foci of these sessions will be to consider how children learn, reflect on pedagogies that are congruent with these theories and how they might be enacted in a PE context and to consider the philosophical underpinnings of physical education. During the 24 weeks on placement, you will learn through a combination of observation, individual, group and whole class teaching, discussions with mentors, attendance at school training events and professional meetings.
The course is organised in partnership with schools in Kent and Medway and beyond. We use the expertise of teachers in partnership schools and tutors in University sessions to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding required for teaching music to young people, across the full secondary age and ability range.
Content
Professional Placement – Module 1
Teaching experiences include opportunities to teach at Key Stage 3 (11-14) and from a range of examination courses such as GCSE, A-level, and other post-14 courses.
You will teach on two main placements. These will be in two contrasting secondary schools in Kent and Medway. You will work during the placements with a subject mentor, who provides opportunities to try out particular skills in a safe environment, planning lessons and evaluating performance. You will also be assigned a professional mentor who will be able to offer advice about generic and whole school issues.
Professional Studies – Module 2
Professional studies sessions aim to inform you about aspects of professional practice which are central to your work, whatever your subject, including how do we learn, how do we include all children, how is teaching a professional activity, how can education be organised and how can learning be assessed.
The module is taught in cross-subject groups so you will have the opportunity to discuss these issues from the perspective of a wide range of subjects.
Curriculum Studies in PE – Module 3
This module involves work in two related strands: practical concept-based workshops and seminars, which together enable you to develop a clear personal rationale, and practical strategies for teaching PE in the secondary and education sector. In the practical workshops, you examine and explore key concepts that underpin the various curricula and syllabi for PE. The seminars allow discussion of different pedagogies and allow critical reflection on differing approaches to the subject.

In addition to the entry requirements you will need the following:

- Have worked with children in a range of contexts related to physical activity.
