Information for Part-time Students
The
University is committed to widening access to higher education and welcomes
applications from people who prefer to study part-time.
The Part-time Degree Programme Offered at Canterbury
Normally students take five or six years to complete their first degree programme. There is no closing date for applications to the part-time day degree programme. However, potential students are encouraged to complete their application form as soon as possible and no later than 1st August in the year you wish to start.
Most subjects in the Single and Joint/Combined Honours section of the prospectus are available for the daytime part-time degree. Descriptions of subjects are given on their pages and you must check individual programme entries to see if a part-time route is available.
It is not currently possible to follow the BSc (Honours) programmes in Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Social Work or Diagnostic Radiography by part-time study. It is, however, possible to follow the Diploma of Higher Education programmes in Nursing Studies (Adult Nursing and Mental Health Nursing) by part-time study.
The three year full-time BA (Hons) Primary Education is not offered on a part-time basis but the Primary Education (7-11) has similar content and is offered part-time over four and a half years. There is also a part-time route via one of the Foundation Degrees offered by the Department of Childhood Studies and the two year part-time top-up programme in Primary Education.
If students combine Professional Development (by Work Based Learning) with another subject of their choice, the time needed to complete a degree can be reduced to four years. A Foundation Degree is offered over 38 months. See here for more details.
At the end of the first two years of part-time study a successful student is eligible for the award of a Certificate of Higher Education if they decide to end their studies. At the end of the fourth year of part-time study, successful students are eligible for a Diploma of Higher Education.
Students wishing to change from part-time to full-time study can do so after the first two years of part-time study are passed successfully. Students with relevant advanced qualifications (e.g. HND or Certificate in Education) may be eligible for exemption from the first year or two of the part-time degree or Foundation Degree.
Foundation Degrees
Canterbury Christ Church University offer several part-time qualifications that can be studied whilst working in a related field.

Entry Requirements
Entry to the part-time degree programmes are generally the same as those for the full-time degree. Each programme offered has a section on entry requirements and there is also information on the entry requirements page. However, the University welcomes applications from mature students who may not have the formal qualifications required. Students in this category may be invited in and, subject to a satisfactory interview, can be admitted onto the part-time degree programme. However, where there are nationally set entry requirements for particular programmes, all students must have these before commencing the programme.
Direct Admission to Year 2 or 3
We will consider applications to the second or third year of degree programmes from suitably qualified applicants. Applicants should normally have passed one or two years of relevant degree level study. Applicants should apply through the normal channels (eg. UCAS) indicating which year of entry they wish to be considered for. A transcript from your current/previous study is normally required.
Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)
You may be able to demonstrate learning which has occurred in the past by way of certification or experience. This is particularly useful for mature students, who may have substantial experience and who may have taken short courses or professional training. Under normal circumstances, students may claim up to a maximum of 50% of the total credit points required for an award, usually for learning which has occurred during the previous five years.
APL relies solely on the provision of evidence of learning by way of certification from another university or college. Applicants will need to provide appropriate documentation including certificates and details of the awarding body. This process may enable you to build directly onto your existing learning if you are choosing a programme of study within the same discipline.
If you would like to receive further information regarding APL/APEL claims and any fees which may be incurred, please contact the Administrative Assistant to the Accreditation Officer (telephone 01227 767700).
European Diploma Supplement
Students who have completed their programme of study and become eligible for an award may obtain a supplementary document, called a European Diploma Supplement, that provides information about the award to universities and employers in other European countries.
See www.canterbury.ac.uk/euro-dip-supp for more information.

Students Interested in Teaching as a Career
Students hoping to apply for a course of initial teacher training (i.e. the Postgraduate Certificate in Education) following the completion of their degree must ensure that their degree studies include a National Curriculum subject (e.g. Art, Early Childhood Studies (for Primary), English, History, Geography, Music, Religious Studies, Science or Sport Science).
Applying for Teaching after taking a First Degree
A large number of people decide to take a first degree and then follow a one year Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) course to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Part-time students have progressed from the University’s undergraduate programmes onto the PGCE. However, this progression is not an automatic right. To gain a place on a PGCE course all applicants must successfully pass the interview stage and Canterbury Christ Church applicants compete equally with graduates from other institutions. Applicants who may wish to apply for one of our PGCEs should ensure that 50% of their degree includes a national curriculum subject – Art, English, French, Geography, History, Music, Religious Studies, Science, or Sport Science.
