Sidney Cooper Gallery
The Sidney Cooper Gallery in Canterbury’s St Peter’s Street
was opened in March 2004. It is on the site of the Old
Canterbury School of Art - a project inaugurated by
Canterbury’s famous Victorian painter Thomas Sidney
Cooper. Its great north-facing windows were purpose-built
for painting and drawing.
With its own curator and assistant curator, the Gallery puts on five exhibitions a year. Shows include work by Canterbury Christ Church University’s own students and staff in the Art and Media Departments as well as exhibitions by regional and national contemporary artists. An emphasis is put on explaining the processes involved in the creation of artworks.
The Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday 11.00am to 1.30pm and 2.30pm to 5.00pm. The Gallery is closed on Sunday and Monday. Entry is free.
