Who we worked with
The arrival of the Tour de France in Canterbury was a significant occasion for the City. As the world's largest annual sporting event, Canterbury City Council was keen to ensure the city benefited as much as possible from the tourism and business opportunities it presented.
The challenge
Canterbury City Council wanted to measure the impact of this major sporting event on local residents and businesses. The council commissioned academics in the Department of Sports Science, Tourism and Leisure to carry out a research study into people's perceptions and attitudes to hosting the Tour de France.
How we helped
"This research is unique and beneficial to the city because the results will contribute to the way in which future events are organised in Canterbury"
Neil McCollum
Tourism Manager, Canterbury City Council
The survey that our academics developed was in two parts: the first part gauged how people were getting involved during the lead up to the event and the second gave residents and business owners a voice in reflecting on the impact. The findings of the study are going to be used to inform the planning of future events.
