The American Colossus: US Foreign Policy and 9/11

Academic Responsibility: Tony McCulloch

This module aims to explain the events of September 11 2001 – the attacks on the USA that resulted in the destruction of the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in New York. It examines the background to the 9/11 attacks, especially US support for Israel and relations with Saudi Arabia. It then looks at the effects of 9/11 on US foreign policy, i.e. the War on Terror and the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Finally, it explores the rise of the USA to superpower status since 1941 and the growth of anti-Americanism in many parts of the world.
