The Native Americans
Academic Responsibility: Sam Hitchmough
This module looks at the history and culture of the Native Americans up until the "Trail of Tears" in the 1830s. It begins by focusing on the recent struggles of the American Indian Movement (AIM) for Native civil rights, especially the life and views of John Trudell, a Native American activist who led the occupation of Alcatraz Island, off the coast of San Francisco. It then looks at the early history of the Native American tribes and the effect on them of the arrival of European civilisation after 1492.
