Time in the USA

The Statue of Liberty

American Studies students at Canterbury Christ Church University have a number of options for spending time in the USA;

  1. There is an annual field trip to the USA which is open to any student in American Studies. The cost is usually £600-£700 and the trip lasts for a week or so. The cost covers air travel, hotel accommodation and transport to and from airports. Students are free to organise their own activities while in the USA but organised tours are arranged by American Studies staff. Recent trips have included New York,Chicago, Washington and San Francisco.  The next trip is scheduled to be to New York and Washington in March 2012. Read this example of an American Studies trip to New York and Washington.
  2. American Studies students can also undertake a summer school (July/August) at selected universities in North America.
  3. American Studies students can spend a semester studying at an American or Canadian university in Year Three. This consists of the first term, up until Christmas or the second and third terms (January to May). The semester counts for 30% of a student's grades within the BA Honours degree.
  4. American Studies single honours students can also spend a year in the USA or Canada, i.e. Year Three, as part of a four year degree. Again, a student's grades in North America count for 30% of his/her degree programme.
  5. The possibility of a three year degree, including a year in the USA or Canada, is being explored for students taking single honours American Studies.
  6. A number of American Studies students also spend one or more summers in the USA involved in Camp America or a similar scheme. American Studies staff are happy to provide references etc for students wishing to do this.
