Examples:
Visitors in the recent past have come from the Ministry of Education in Lebanon, universities in China and Yemen, the Chief Inspector of English from Qatar, a delegation from Thailand and many others. In each case a visit programme was personally prepared for them to ensure that they gained maximum benefit from their stay.
Timing:
Visitors normally stay in Canterbury for a period of two to three weeks. In our view a period of two weeks is ideal, since it usually allows for significant progress to be achieved in curriculum development, test preparation, materials development and so on. However, shorter and longer visits can be arranged.
Attachments are normally timed to fit in with relevant parts of our MA TESOL and PhD Research programmes to allow visitors to attend lectures and seminars relevant to their field. We also have a regular programme of research seminars and visiting speaker talks which participants can attend.
Cost:
The cost of these attachments is deliberately set as low as possible so as to make them accessible to a wide range of academic and teaching professionals. It can be broken down as follows:
Academic fee: £600 per week (includes daily individual tutorial support, plus free attendance at all relevant lectures, guest speakers, an introduction to Canterbury and campus, access to the library, free email and internet use, general support and assistance during their stay. They will be looked after by one of our staff personally throughout their stay.)
Accommodation: Estimate around £45 per night B&B, or £75 for a hotel.
Subsistence: Estimate a minimum of £30 a day for food and other expenses. In short, this is a cost-effective solution for staff development - more economical than attendance at a seminar, yet tailored to the exact needs of a project or development programme, with clear targets and outcomes to be agreed before they arrive.
Canterbury offers an ideal environment for visiting TESOL professionals to focus on specific projects and to develop their own professional expertise in a safe but dynamic environment.
