This module is mandatory for students on all pathways of the MA in English.
Focusing on strategies and tools for advanced research in English, the module examines methodological, practical and theoretical approaches to literary research and scholarship. It facilitates students' learning strategies and organization towards independent research by examining techniques and tools for advanced scholarship, including the use of electronic and "hard copy" research methods. The module provides guidance on such matters as advanced academic writing, compiling bibliographies, developing research topics and preparing research essay and dissertation proposals. Students' skills in independent research and organization are enabled through a range of assessment tasks.
Postgraduate students in English who are not following this MA programme (e.g. MPhil/PhD students) are also invited to attend this module.
Assessment
1,000 word annotated bibliography (25%)
1,000 word scholarly writing and editing Assignment (25%)
2,000 word dissertation proposal (40%)
10 minute oral presentation (10%)
