(unless otherwise stated, all modules are worth 20 credits)

100 of the 120 credits taken at Level 1 must be Discipline Modules, and on this pathway there are five which are mandatory. Of these five, the first three (to a total of 60 credits) are designated as 'Literature' modules, and the other two are designated as 'Language modules' (to a total of 40 credits). The remaining 20 credits can come either from one of the four listed Optional Discipline Modules or from the Level 1 starred modules of any other programme within the General Modular Scheme.

• Investigating Language (from the BA English Language and Communication programme) ((Language module) 

Optional Discipline Modules (which the Department will offer either annually or occasionally, depending on demand and on staffing)

• Critical Approaches to English Literature (Literature module)
• Introduction to Shakespeare: Texts and Contexts (Literature module)
• American Literature 1607-1880 (Literature module)

• Key Words: Sense Shifts and Pressure Points in English (Language Module) (not offered in 2009-10)

Discipline modules to the value either of 100 or of 120 credits must be taken, including the four which, in order to ensure that all students take the minimum 40 credits' worth both of Literature and Language modules, are designated below as mandatory. Students must then take either one or two modules from the following list of optional discipline modules (20 credits each). If only one is taken, the remaining 20 credits may come from the Level 2 starred modules of any other programme within the General Modular Scheme.

Mandatory Discipline Module

• British Romanticism 1785-1831 (Literature module)
• Literature Between the Wars 1918-39 (Literature module)
• The Descent of English: Syntax from Old English to the Present Day (Language module)
• Discourse, Text and Genre (Language module, from the BA English Language and Communication programme)

Optional Discipline Modules (which the Department will offer either annually or occasionally, depending on demand and on staffing)

Either ONE or TWO modules to be taken from the following list:

• Text and the City: Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales (Literature module)
• Writing the English Renaissance: Book Culture 1500-1600 (Literature module)
• Cross-Cultural Connections in Shakespearan Drama¹ (Literature module)
• Ways of Reading Shakespeare¹ (Literature module)
• Seventeenth-Century Literature and Society (Literature module)
• Eighteenth-Century Fiction: Bunyan to Smollett (Literature module)
• Drama Production (Language module)

¹These two modules cannot be taken simultaneously.

Discipline modules to the value either of 100 or of 120 credits must be taken, at least 40 of which should be in Literature modules and at least 40 in Language modules.  These include, as mandatory modules for all students, Language and Society (20 credits) and the Final Year Individual Study (40 credits), which may be in a Literature or a Language topic, or some combination of the two. Of the remaining 60 credits, a minimum of 40 must come from the following list of optional discipline modules. If only 40 credits (2 modules) are selected from this list, the remaining 20 may come from the Level 3 starred modules of any other programme within the General Modular Scheme. In their choice of options, all students must ensure they meet the minimum requirement of 40 credits in Literature and another 40 in Language.

•  Final Year Individual Study (40 credits) (Literature or Language module, or a combination of the two depending on the topic chosen. If the topic is a combination of the two, 20 credits will count as Literature credits and 20 as Language credits)
