MENMD3FYS: Final Year Individual Study

Credits: 20 credits or 40 credits
Course Director: Dr Stefania Ciocia

The Final Year Independent Study (Literature) offers you the opportunity to work on a specific topic which you will devise in consultation with your supervisor, in order to produce a sustained piece of research-led critical analysis.

You will discuss your work and plan your writing with your supervisor, and pursue in detail your chosen area of literary investigation, producing a dissertation appropriate to Level 6 (i.e. Year 3) English studies.

Teaching is through individual tutorials at times agreed between the supervisor and student. The allocation of supervisors will take place at the beginning of the academic year, when staff availability is confirmed.

Assessment is by a formal dissertation proposal (submitted at the beginning of Term 2, worth 20% of the module) and a final dissertation (submitted at the beginning of Term 3, worth 80% of the module).

In both versions, the formal proposal is 800 words. In the 20-credit version, the dissertation is 4,000 words; in the 40-credit version it is 8,000 words.

Note that, if you take the 40-credit version, you must pass it to get a degree (since only 20 credits of failure can be permitted at any one Level).
