MENMD1TAN: Theory and the Novel
This is a mandatory Level 4 module for Combined Honours and Single Honours students.

This module seeks to investigate the novel as a literary genre, adopting a morphological approach as well as looking at its development through time. It combines the general study of narrative form with a detailed analysis of a selection of primary texts, and an overview of the notions of classic realism, modernism and postmodernism. It aims to equip participating students with the theoretical frames most likely to enhance their understanding and enjoyment of whatever novels they go on to read in future years or to study at higher levels.
Assessment:
Assessment will be by two coursework essays of 1000 words each (20% + 20% =40%) and a takeaway examination paper (60%).
