Marriage Gifts in Ancient and Modern India: Focus on Hindu Dowry Custom. Ms. Pulane E. Motswapong. 11.15-12.45pm
Room: Ng03. Modern Indian dowry has reached alarming proportions, often leaving the bride's families materially destroyed and sometimes leading to the infamous 'kitchen accidents' - dowry murders motivated by greed. How justified is the claim that Modern Indian marriage gifts are an end product of the Ancient Hindu custom?
In this seminar, Ms. Pulane E. Motswapong, Lecturer in Religious Studies at the University of Botswana, presents the findings of her recently submitted PhD thesis (supervisor: Dr. Burkhard Scherer).
