K Burwell

PhD, MA, BMus, DSCM, FTCL, LTCL, LMusA, AMusA

Principal Lecturer.  Programme Director for Master of Music.

Kim Burwell completed her early music education in Australia, before coming to England to study piano with Ronald Smith. A graduate of Durham University and a Fellow of Trinity College, London, Kim Burwell completed her Masters degree in piano performance in 1998.

With a special interest in performance, her present research interests are focused on instrumental teaching and learning. Several long-term research projects have benefited from support from the Performing Arts Learning & Teaching Innovation Network (PALATINE). The first of these, in collaboration with David Pickup and Vanessa Young, explored the nature of individual lessons, with particular reference to verbal behaviour; the second, in collaboration with Matthew Shipton, is currently investigating strategic approaches to practice, rehearsal and performance. A book based on Kim's PhD thesis, Instrumental teaching and learning in higher education, is currently in preparation. Papers have been published in, for example, the British Journal of Music Education and Music Education Research. International Conference presentations have been given at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama Reflective Conservatoire conference, and on several occasions the Research in Music Education conference at the University of Exeter. Seminar presentations have also been given at the University of Newcastle, the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, the Royal Northern College of Music, and the University of Ulster.

As a pianist Kim Burwell has performed as soloist, accompanist and chamber musician in Australia, Canada, and the Middle East, as well as locally. Performances in Britain include the Purcell Room, St David's Hall Cardiff, and the South Bank Centre. An enthusiasm for contemporary music has led to first performances of composers Paul Max Edlin and Roderick Watkins, and she has worked extensively in a duo with Canadian flautist Lisa Nelsen. Kim Burwell is also an enthusiastic teacher, and continues to give piano tuition at undergraduate and Masters level.
